I host a lot of people who are in San Juan to work, not to vacation, and they ask better questions than anyone else. Not "is it pretty," but "will my video calls hold," "is there somewhere to sit that is not a bed," and "can I cook on a Tuesday." Condado works very well for a solo work trip, but only if you pick your stay on the boring criteria. Here is what actually matters.
What a solo work trip in Condado really needs
A leisure guest optimizes for the view. A working guest optimizes for the eight hours between waking up and closing the laptop, and then wants the view as a reward. Those are different shopping lists.
After three years of hosting, the five things that decide whether a work trip goes well here are, in order: reliable internet, a genuine work surface with a chair, a kitchen you will actually use, sound control, and being able to walk to everything so you are not negotiating a rental car on top of a deadline. Everything else, the balcony, the pool, the hot tub, is upside. Lovely upside, but upside.
Condado happens to be the strongest neighborhood in San Juan for that list, because it is dense, walkable, and residential enough that the streets are not a party at 2am on a Wednesday. You are inside a city, not inside a resort compound, which matters when you need a pharmacy at 8pm or a quiet coffee at 7am.
The WiFi question, answered honestly
Every listing on every platform says "fast WiFi." That claim is close to meaningless, so here is how to actually verify it before you book.
Message the host and ask three specific things: the approximate download and upload speed, whether the connection is fiber or cable, and whether there is a backup option. Upload speed is the one people forget, and it is the one that decides whether you look like a slideshow on a call. Anything with a genuinely usable upload will handle Zoom, Google Meet, and screen sharing without drama.
Ask the backup question too. Puerto Rico has occasional utility interruptions, more so in late summer, and the honest answer from any host should be that your phone hotspot is the fallback. Most US carriers treat Puerto Rico as domestic, so your plan works here without roaming charges, which quietly makes this one of the lowest risk places in the Caribbean to work from. A host who tells you that plainly is a host who has thought about it.
One more practical note: test your setup on day one, not on the morning of the call that matters. If something is wrong, you want a full day of runway to fix it.
A real desk, not a couch and a pillow
This is where most vacation rentals fail working guests, and it is the single thing I would tell you to filter on hardest.
A dining table with a proper chair is fine. A kitchen counter with a stool is workable for a few days. A couch with a laptop on your knees will wreck your back by day three and your posture will show up in your work. When you look at photos, ignore the styled shots and look for a flat surface at roughly desk height with a chair that has a back. If you cannot tell from the photos, ask. Any host worth booking will answer in a sentence.
Light is the other half of this. A workspace near a window or a balcony door means you are lit from the front on calls instead of being a silhouette, and it means you are not sitting under a ceiling fixture all day. Bring one thing from home if you can: a laptop stand, or even a stack of books, plus a separate keyboard. It weighs almost nothing and it converts any table into a real desk.
Why a kitchen changes the math on a week or longer
On a three night trip, eating out every meal is part of the fun. On a two week trip, it is a slow tax on your budget and your energy.
Condado has excellent restaurants, and you should use them, but the working rhythm that people settle into here is coffee and breakfast at home, lunch at the desk from whatever you cooked, and dinner out when you feel like it. That pattern costs a fraction of three restaurant meals a day and it removes a decision from every morning.
There are supermarkets within walking distance in and around Condado, so a single stock up trip on arrival covers you. Buy coffee, eggs, fruit, something you can turn into two dinners, and a case of water. The whole exercise takes forty minutes and pays for itself by day three.
Practically, this means you want a real kitchen, not a mini fridge and a microwave. A cooktop, a full fridge, and enough counter to actually chop something. This is the clearest advantage a studio has over a hotel room at a similar nightly rate, and it is worth checking the photos carefully rather than trusting the word "kitchenette."
Length of stay is your biggest lever on price
Here is the part nobody tells solo travelers, and it is the most useful thing in this article.
Nightly rates are not linear. Most vacation rentals, including ours, apply meaningful weekly and monthly discounts, because a single long booking costs a host far less in turnovers and cleaning than several short ones. The practical effect is that seven nights often costs barely more than five, and twenty eight nights can land at a per night rate that is not comparable to anything a hotel will offer you.
So if your trip is flexible by a day or two, price the longer version before you book the shorter one. And if you are choosing between two properties, compare the total for your actual dates including cleaning and fees, not the headline nightly rate. Cleaning is a fixed cost spread across your stay, which means it hurts a lot on three nights and disappears on fourteen.

On time zones: Puerto Rico is Atlantic Time, which is US Eastern in summer and one hour ahead of Eastern in winter. If your team is on the mainland, you are effectively working normal hours, and in winter you get a bonus hour of quiet every morning before anyone else logs on. That hour, with coffee on a balcony, is the actual reason people extend these trips.
On rhythm: build the day around the water. Work early, take a real break in the afternoon when the light is best, and finish in the evening. It is a better schedule than the one you have at home, and it is the whole point of working from somewhere else.
