A local Superhost's guide to the best things to do in San Juan with kids, and how to pick a family-friendly Condado vacation rental.

Bringing the kids to Puerto Rico? You picked a great destination. As a local Superhost in Condado, I have welcomed hundreds of families, and San Juan rewards them with calm beaches, real-life castles, and a rainforest an hour away. Here is my honest, on-the-ground guide to the best things to do in San Juan with kids, plus how to choose a family-friendly vacation rental so your home base works as hard as your itinerary. Two relaxed activities a day usually beats five rushed ones.

The Best Things to Do in San Juan with Kids

Start with the forts in Old San Juan, roughly a ten to fifteen minute drive from Condado. The grassy esplanade in front of Castillo San Felipe del Morro (El Morro) is a famous spot for flying kites, and the fort's tunnels, cannons, and sentry boxes feel like a real-life adventure to a curious six year old. Castillo San Cristobal nearby offers more ramparts to explore. The cobblestone streets are stroller-tricky, so a baby carrier helps with little ones.

Back in Condado, the lagoon (Laguna del Condado) is calm, protected water that is ideal for paddleboarding and kayaking with kids old enough to join you. It is one of my favorite low-stress mornings on the water. For free, walkable fun, Ventana al Mar is an oceanfront park right on Ashford Avenue with open green space where kids can run, and the nearby Parque del Indio gives you another small green pocket with public art and ocean views. These spots are gold when you need to burn off energy before dinner.

Kid-Friendly Beaches and Parks in Condado

Condado is a beachfront neighborhood, but not every stretch of sand is the same. The open Atlantic side can have lively surf and the occasional strong current, which thrills older kids but is less ideal for toddlers. For calmer water, look for the protected coves along Condado Beach, where rock formations break the swell and create shallow, gentle pools that younger children love. Always check posted conditions, watch for flags, and keep little ones within arm's reach.

The beauty of staying in Condado is that the beach, the lagoon, and these parks are mostly walkable, so you can pop back to your rental for naps, snacks, and a change of clothes without a big production. If you would rather skip the rental car entirely, you can. I broke it all down in Is Condado Walkable? A Local Host's Guide to San Juan Without a Car, which covers getting around with kids and strollers.

Family Day Trips from Condado

When you are ready to venture further, El Yunque National Forest is about an hour's drive east and makes a memorable family day, with rainforest trails and natural pools. Access and reservation rules can change, so check the current requirements before you go and start early to beat the heat and crowds. Older kids tend to love the short, rewarding trails to waterfalls and lookout towers.

Closer to home, a sunset stroll near the Dos Hermanos bridge, a scoop of ice cream on Ashford Avenue, or simply watching planes and boats from the lagoon can fill an easy evening without a long car trip. With kids, the unglamorous wins (a pool afternoon, an early dinner, a walk to the playground) are often the ones they remember.

What to Look for in a Family-Friendly Vacation Rental in San Juan

Families often ask which vacation rentals in San Juan actually work for kids, with the cribs, kitchen space, and child-friendly setups that make a trip easier. Focus on the things that quietly make or break a trip. A full kitchenette tops my list: being able to warm a bottle, store snacks, and cook a simple breakfast saves money and meltdowns. Look for a refrigerator, a microwave, a cooktop, and basic cookware.

Sleeping arrangements come next. Many Condado studios have two queen beds, which comfortably fit two adults and two children, and a penthouse adds room for larger groups. If you travel with a baby, message your host before booking to ask about a pack-and-play or crib, a high chair, and whether the layout has a quiet corner for naps. A good host will tell you honestly what is available rather than leave you guessing on arrival. Also confirm laundry access (a lifesaver after a sandy beach day), a pool for lively-surf afternoons, blackout curtains for early bedtimes, and an elevator if you are hauling a stroller and bags. Practical Tips for Visiting San Juan with Kids

A few habits make family travel here smoother. Stock up on day one: there is a supermarket and pharmacies within easy reach of Condado, so you can buy diapers, formula, snacks, and water as soon as you land instead of overpacking. Plan around the heat, with mornings and late afternoons for beach play and a midday break back at the rental, which is exactly why a kitchenette and a pool earn their keep.

Getting in is quick. Luis Munoz Marin International Airport (SJU) is roughly fifteen to twenty minutes from Condado, so even a late arrival with sleepy kids is manageable. Pack reef-safe sunscreen, water shoes for rocky coves, and a light layer for breezy evenings. Keep the schedule loose, build in pool time, and let the trip breathe.

Our Condado Studios and Penthouse for Families

At Condado Lagoon Waterfront Villas, our waterfront studios and penthouses are set up for easy, comfortable family stays. Many studios feature full kitchenettes, two queen beds, private balconies with lagoon or ocean views, and shared pool access, while our oceanview penthouse adds extra space and a hot tub for bigger groups. Everything sits in a walkable part of Condado, steps from the beach and the lagoon, so you can leave the car parked. See floor plans and photos on our properties page, and message me first about cribs, high chairs, and the quietest units for nap schedules.
