Driving yourself. If you have a rental car, the drive is quick, but parking in Old San Juan is the real challenge. The streets are narrow and spots are scarce. Use the paid parking garages near the entrance to the old city, such as the ones around Covadonga by the cruise piers, and explore on foot from there.
One more tip: once you are inside Old San Juan, there is a free trolley that loops through the historic district. It is a nice way to rest your feet between the forts.
Planning the Perfect Old San Juan Day Trip from Condado
